| Why
should you care? |
|
In
Chinese, crisis and opportunity share the same symbol.
Often times it takes a crisis to make us see the opportunities
at hand. The national and local concern surrounding South
Florida's water resources provide for a unique planning effort
to analyze critical issues such as:
- Urban
Sprawl
- Degradation
of Biscayne Bay, America's Everglades and other wetland
ecosystems
- Pressures
on land/water resources
- The
future of agriculture in South Miami-Dade County
|
|
|
Perhaps
it takes an apparent roadblock to result in the re-thinking of how
decisions are made. The South Miami-Dade Watershed Study and Plan,
based on stakeholder input, aims to provide the data, consider the
interrelationships, and employ a "systems-thinking" framework
to allow decision makers to define South Florida's problems and build
creative and sustainable solutions. |
|
|
|
|
|
South
Miami-Dade Watershed Study and Plan objectives include:
- Defining
problems by looking at them within the "big picture,"
remembering that interrelationships and connectedness are at the
heart of any large scale planning study.
- Identifying
solutions-- through a consensus process--that provide long-term
sustainability.
- Designing
an integrated land use and water management plan to guide South
Florida's decision-making processes for the next fifty years.
|
|
|
The
South Miami-Dade Watershed Study and Plan will look at all relevant
studies pertaining to the watershed area:
- Existing
and needed numeric standards for the quality, quantity, timing
and distribution of waters into and out of Biscayne National Park;
- Existing
and needed water supply studies;
- Best
management practices for sources of storm water runoff;
- Methods
for integrating the Watershed Plan into the CERP Restudy.

The
Watershed Study Advisory Committee, made up of representatives of
the various stakeholders-agriculture, tourism, business, development,
environmental interests, and civic organizations--will assure that
all angles are considered and all voices are heard. For more information,

In
addition, a vigorous public involvement effort is underway
to inform the public as to the status of the study and to engage
the community, soliciting public input throughout the process. For

Why
should you
care about South
Miami-Dade's Watershed?
|
|
FACT:
By
the year 2025
Miami-Dade County's population will surpass
3 million people!
FACT:
Without
proper planning, these new residents will likely put further strain
on the area's already over-taxed water supply-to the tune of well
over 125 million gallons per day!
FACT:
Without
proper planning, new development may threaten existing quality of
life and lead to additional depletion of our land and water resources.
FACT:
With
thoughtful, forward-looking, in-depth planning - planning that takes
into account the linkage between the economy, quality of life, and
the environment -- the County can pave the way for a sustainable
South Florida.
